Ahmadinejad’s welcome resonates across the Israeli border.

By Ahmed Asif

It is the closest the Iranian President has ever come to his arch enemy Israel. 4 kilometers of land to separate them to be precise. And in the town of Bint Jbeil he delivered another one of his trademark fiery speeches to a loyal crowd.

As part of his official two day visit to Lebanon, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad visited the town just 2 miles to the border and the stronghold of Hezbollah who fought with the Israeli army in a devastating war in 2006. The damage inflicted upon the Lebanese town was repaired with the willing help of the Iranian government who poured millions into its reconstruction. Iran has been a major contributor of aid to the country in the past few years and it may extend that help by possibly helping to equip the Lebanese with weaponry which the US has put on hold after the deadly battle along the blue line just a short while back.

The Iranian President arrived to the southern town to a hero’s welcome, with signs established at the entrance of the town reading “The south welcomes the protector of resistance.” The reception was of such volume that it was reported on Israeli TV that it was audible on the Israeli side of the border. A noise that surely would have further annoyed his bitter foes.

A man who regularly voices his opposition against America and the “Zionist entity” got the opportunity to go as controversially close to the country he has long refused to recognize as a state, and there he delivered more of a restrained speech. In it the President praised the resistance of the town; “The Zionists planned to destroy this community, but it stood strong against the occupiers.” As the packed football stadium deafening cheered Ahmadinejad continued; “You will stay and your enemies, who are the enemies of humanity, are on their way to demise and annihilation. You are honoured and your Zionist enemies are humiliated and weak.”

Iran is known to have close ties with the Lebanese resistance group Hezbollah and it was made apparent when Hezbollah’s Secretary General Hassan Nasrallah emerged from hiding to meet with his friend and then presented him with a present. But not just any ordinary gift that leaders often exchange, rather a symbolic gift; Nasrallah passed on to Ahmadinejad a weapon of an Israeli soldier that was taken by a Lebanese fighter during intense battle. A sign of victory.

A short distance away on the Israeli side of the border Israeli Prime Minister chose surprisingly to directly respond to Ahmadinejad’s comments. In the same hall that Ben Gurion, Israel’s first Prime Minister, declared the existence of the state Netanyahu said; “We heard today the cursing and the language of contempt from the Lebanon border. . . We will continue to build our country and we will know very well how to defend it.”

The visit by Ahmadinejad and the immediate response by Netanyahu billed upto what the public expected. A show in which Ahmadinejad showed his unwavering support for the group that not only exposed Israel’s Achilles heel but defeated its military might and Netanyahu who once again emphasised, to not only Iran but the world, that Israel has the capabilities and the vital support of the US to protect themselves and exist in the worlds most hostile region. The only piece missing to this iconic visit was an all out military confrontation at the volatile border.

Inside Russia’s mind.

By Ahmed Asif

What seemed like a good friendship between two nations is now beginning to turn sour. Iran and Russia have long enjoyed a mutual relationship and good trade relations yet Iran’s nuclear program has witnessed the relationship somewhat deteriorate. The Russians along with China have been Iran’s only allies among the United Nations Security Council members over its disputed nuclear program and ambitions. However with recent sanctions being imposed on the country with the backing of its two close allies the question begs to be asked, with Iran’s crucial allies playing to different tune over its program is it now likely that the Iranians will indeed reluctantly sit at the negotiating table? GLASGOW BRACED FOR ANTI-MUSLIM PROTEST BY FOOTBALL HOOLIGANS

By Ahmed Asif

After witnessing violent protests in England by football hooligans against “Islamic Extremists”, Glasgow will soon be the centre of news attention when the Scottish Defence League (SDL) take to the streets next week.

The SDL- a branch of the UK Casuals United- plan to protest on the 14th of November through the City Centre and also at Glasgow’s biggest mosque, previous protests by similar groups up and down Britain have turned violent with the football hooligans fighting running battles with anti-fascist campaigners and Asian youths.

The English Defence League which is partnered with the Scottish, Welsh and Ulster Defence League state on their website that:“The EDL was formed on the 27th of June, 2009 due to frustration at the lack of any significant action by the British Government against extremist Muslim preachers and organisations”       they continued: “Some organisations and media reports have branded the EDL as ‘racist,’ ‘fascist,’ ‘far-right,’ or even ‘Zionist.’ All of these accusations are flat out untrue. We take an actively anti-racist and anti-fascist stance. In addition, the EDL is non-political, taking no position on right-wing vs. left-wing”.

The Scottish Defence League stated on their website:“Despite the lies of some members of the Scottish media we would like to confirm that the SDL is not a sectarian organisation and all members of Scottish society are welcome to join our protest against Islamic militant activity within our nation”. Casuals United consist of football hooligans who have joined forces to confront Muslim extremists, their protests often end in running battles, dozens of arrests and the city left healing picking up the pieces.

Glasgow City Council and Strathclyde Police have already stated that they will not grant permission for the far right hooligans to march through the streets of Glasgow.

Chair of the Scottish-Islamic Foundation, Asif Ahmed stated: “We congratulate Glasgow City Council and Strathclyde Police for the stance that they’ve taken on the SDL. The likelihood is though that even if banned, there will be an illegal protest. We have to be ready for that”.

United Against Fascism (UAF), a group whose main aim is “alerting British society to the rising threat of the extreme right, in particular the British National Party” have been present at the majority of the EDL’s protests in England and have backed the counter protest against the SDL,“In Glasgow, UAF is backing the Scotland United anti-SDL demonstration, which has the backing of the Scottish TUC, the Scottish-Islamic Foundation and a host of other trade unions and civil society organisations” . A statement on the UAF website continued, “We aim to unite the broadest possible spectrum of society to counter this threat”

“Nobody should be fooled by the attempts of the EDL and SDL to pretend they are not racists. Video footage and photos of their demonstrations show EDL supporters chanting disgusting racist slogans and making Nazi “seig heil” salutes. These “peaceful” protesters responded to this evidence by sending death threats to the journalists involved”.

Although the protest by the SDL has not been confirmed officially police are gearing themselves for a possible illegal protest, anti fascist campaigners have already planned to congregate in the town centre in case the football casuals arrive.

The Scottish Islamic Foundation however are not planning to directly confront the SDL, instead an event labelled “Scotland United” has been organised nearby at Glasgow Green. The event is designed to bring together: “faith groups, trade unions, community organisations and politicians to celebrate Scotland’s multiculturalism.”

Human rights lawyer, Aamer Anwar said: “Previous EDL demonstrations have seen their thugs attack Asian people, chant “Muslims out” and worse at passers-by and make “Seig Heil” Nazi salutes. It is vital that we do not allow these racist thugs to terrorise and intimidate Muslim and Asian people. It is not a time to hide but to stand up for a multicultural Glasgow, a multicultural Scotland.”

Royal Mail Dealt Another Blow

By Ahmed Asif

The Scottish government handed Royal Mail a killer blow after handing rival company TNT a multi-million pound contract to deliver second class mail.

Royal Mail which is has been hit with a wave of criticism from every corner after deciding to call a strike after fears that hundreds of full time jobs would be cut and instead many part-time jobs would replace it and also about working conditions and pay. The strikes planned for the 22nd and 23rd of October would cause massive disruption to delivery service nationwide.

However the Scottish government decided to offer the £8m contract to TNT stating that this deal would save the public just under £3m each year. However many would see this as the latest saga surrounding Royal Mail’s decision to strike. Many companies such as Ebay are are already pondering on the possibility of switching from Royal Mail to a private firm in order to keep their services full functional and customers happy. Royal Mail are playing a dangerous game with the high possibility of losing contracts worth millions if they do not call off the strike.

Pat McFadden the Business Minister stated “The most fundamental challenge to Royal Mail is not competition from other mail companies – it’s competition from other communication technologies and that must lie at the heart of the response to this dispute.”

A Royal Mail spokesman  said: “Royal Mail submitted as competitive a bid as possible for the contracts being tendered.

“We are fighting hard to retain every letter we possibly can but we operate in a commercial market in which we are facing increasingly fierce competition.

“That is why we urgently need to modernise our operations so we can compete and win business such as this.”

Workers voted with a huge majority for a nationwide strike against Royal Mail over working conditions, pay and huge reform plans.

One Week, One Cause, All The Difference

By Ahmed Asif

An annual charity event which witnesses university students uniting together to raise funds for needy children and orphans throughout the globe is due to kick off within the next couple of weeks in the UK.

This event allows Islamic Societies in universities up and down the Britain to work together for one week by organising various events and fundraisers in order to raise money for orphans and needy children in various troubled regions throughout the world. The UK wide event is backed by Islamic Relief, a world renown charity which has undertaken crucial charity projects in countries such as Iraq, Palestine, Kenya and Chechnya and which also respond swiftly to any humanitarian or natural disasters which occur.

Ahmed Shaikh, head of Charity Week in Scotland stated that “Charity Week is a week dedicated to raising funds and awareness for needy orphans around the world. It started a few years ago in London by an Islamic Society, the project is designed to get societies to get together and work together and since then it has spread throughout the UK and even internationally. Scotland took part for the very first time last year and hopefully for many years to come”.

Charity Week has been a hit throughout the universities in the UK and has been highly successful, previous years have seen funds being raised in it’s hundreds of thousands. Students have taken time out of their hectic timetables and exam revision period to raise money for those who are less fortunate. Shaikh mentioned “Charity Week is growing exponentially, at first we raised a few thousand then £30,000 then £120,000 and then £200,000. Last year in Scotland alone we raised £50,000″.

However Charity Week is not exclusively open to Islamic Societies and students who follow the Islamic faith, Shaikh stressed that “Charity Week is open to anyone and everyone, it’s open to people of all faiths and people of no faith”,  he continued “Last year we organised an inter faith dialogue and the topic was charity as a duty for all mankind. We invited a priest, a rabbi and a sheikh and the aim was to highlight the common ground we share”.

When asked where the money raised from previous Charity Week fundraisers had been spent Shaikh replied “Our previous funds have been spent on a wide range of projects we have previously sponsored 100 orphans in Gaza for 3 years, we have refurbished an orphanage in Chechnya, we sponsored 100 orphans in Pakistan after the earthquake and we donated money for equipment to an orphanage in Kenya for handicapped children”, he continued “last year’s money was spent on building a vocational training centre for orphans in Niger. It’s a centre where orphans are given essential skills such as carpentry and sewing in order to equip them for the future”.

Charity Week is due to begin within the next couple of days and events have already been well publicised in universities campuses. A sponsored cycle around Millport, a sky dive, a girls night out and a football tournament are just a few of the proposed events.

Brave students have also volunteered to brace the harsh Scottish weather in order to bucket in Glasgow and Edinburgh city centre’s. Asked about the feedback from the public Shaikh stated “the response from the general public has been very good and the majority of people are happy to give money, you get the odd eyebrow being raised when the see the Islamic Relief logo on the back of the t-shirts, however, the council and police have all been very cooperative and helpful”.

Edinburgh Council were not available for comment.

The SPSC Five

By Ahmed Asif

Five members of a pro-Palestinian group are appearing in court on the charge of racism after protesting at the Edinburgh Festival against the Jerusalem Quartet.

The members of the Scottish Palestine Solidarity Campaign interrupted the performance on the 29th of August by shouting anti-Israeli slogans during the performance, chants of “End the siege of Gaza” and “Boycott Israel” were echoed throughout the hall.

One of the members who participated in the protest who was subsequently arrested by police  stated on the nature of the arrest that “Given the absurd nature of the charge clearly designed to criminalise  the growing campaign to boycott Apartheid Israel until it respects Palestinian human rights, rather than oppose the new charges, we welcomed the opportunity to highlight that to boycott Israel is the opposite of racist”.

The Jerusalem Quartet started their performance but were interrupted on several occasions, as the first protester was escorted out by police and the performance resumed another pro-Palestine supporter stood up and voiced her say stating that Palestinians could not enjoy the same level of freedom of movement as the Israeli’s and also criticised the Israeli army.

The original charge of breach of peace was upgraded by the procurator fiscal a week before the trial was due to begin. The procurator fiscal felt that that the conduct of the five members of the SPSC was “racially motivated”.

The SPSC targeted this group because they all participated in active military service in the IDF and also because the Jerusalem Quartet is supported by the Israeli government who they accuse of violating Palestinian human rights and their ongoing illegal occupation of Palestinian land.

Journalist and honorary President of the SPSC, Marion Woolfson stated that the charges being put forward against her fellow members as “ridiculous”.

Lothian and Borders Police declined to comment under the Data Protection Act.

The trial continues.
