Glasgow’s Riverside Museum is the UK’s newest and most exciting visitor attraction, home to the transport, engineering and shipbuilding legacy that made Glasgow great.

The Riverside Museum is an architectural masterpiece, designed by British-Iraqi, Zaha Hadid.  Her company was picked from 140 submissions to build the £74 million Riverside Museum. The 74 million museum is Hadid’s first major public commission to open in Glasgow and 18 months later there will be another great master work will be opening – the new aquatics centre for the 2012 Olympics.

Visitors will be struck by the stunning displays, packed with fascinating exhibits, high-tech and hands-on interactions and inspiring moving stories. You’ll be able to walk down the re-created 1900s street, drive a locomotive and tackle a tenement fire, with more than 3,000 objects on display, there is something for everyone of all ages.

Outside, The Tall Ship Glenlee is moored in front of the museum creating a dramatic and iconic international destination. The Glenlee is one of only five Clyde-built sailing vessels afloat in the world today and the only one in the UK.

Councillor Gordon Matherson, the leader of Glasgow City Council, said “Glasgow’s history as an industrial giant, a global leader in engineering and shipbuilding, is celebrated is am architectural masterpiece which shows that we remain at the cutting edge of design and technology.”

Zaha Hadid said “The history of Glasgow is profoundly interlinked with the history of the Clyde, and together they have informed the museum’s design. I wanted the building to reflect the importance of its location and allow for the innovative and inspirational display of its outstanding collection. The fluid design continues Glasgow’s rich engineering traditions; a true demonstration and celebration of the skills and passion of local engineers and contractors who helped to bring this building to life.”

The museum will open its doors to the public on 21st June 2011. Entry to Riverside Museum is free!

How does stress show-up?

Worrying about deadlines or anxious about not being able to face the challenges of a particular task can cause  muscles to get tense, can’t seem to focus on work and in back of your mind you might realise that having excessive work , assignments and family problems. Negative thinking can cause intense stress, unhappiness and can severely damage self-confidence. The longer you are crushed under the waves of stress the more damage will do to yourself. It is important to manage stress as this can affect total well being.

Almost anything can make us feel stressed, but essentially there are TEN key points that are common for most people:

  1. Separation and loss, such as losing your job, getting divorced or death of someone close;
  2. Angry and aggressive
  3. Avoiding studies or socialising
  4. Feeling worthless
  5. Hands sweaty
  6. Consuming too much alcohol/drugs
  7. Signs of tension, such as nail biting
  8. Loss of appetite
  9. Skin problems
  10. Neck or backache

Protect yourself from negative emotional or psychological thoughts and develop a positive new outlook. If stress becomes too excessive – day-in, day-out, it can damage and harm physical and emotional well-being, happiness, work performance, and relationships.

Best Historical Places to Visit in Istanbul

BY BURCIN MERTCAN

Napoleon once said:  “If earth was a single state, Istanbul would be its capital.” Turkey is a spectacular country full of history, ancient monuments and natural wonders. Once home to the Byzantine and Ottoman Empires, Turkey is littered with wonderfully preserved ancient sites.

The most beautiful landmark is the Blue Mosque. Founded by Sultan Ahmet I, the mosque was completed in 1616. It’s a spectacular in all angles and the interior is simply stunning. The Blue Mosque has tall slender minarets that are outstanding and the mosques round curved domes, which race up into the sky. The marble courtyard is huge with fountains neatly placed for people to perform spiritual Wuzu. Upon entering the building look up and feel the height of the roof starting to make you feel unsteady, and your eyes captured by the dangling chandeliers, blue decorated ceramic tiles and 260 windows, which lighten the mosque. The Blue Mosque is Istanbul’s must see structure. [Read more...]
