Blood donors in demand

Donations save lives.

The number of regular blood donors in Scotland is beginning to fall dramatically according to The Scottish National Blood Transfusion Service.

Figures revealed this month showed that there are 30,000 less registered donors giving regularly in Scotland compared to ten years ago.

As is often the case in the build up to Christmas, the number of blood donors suffers a massive decrease as temperatures start to fall and donors begin to develop cold and flue symptoms.

The Scottish National Blood Transfusion Service fear this year more than ever they will suffer a huge loss of donors as a result of the outbreak of swine flu around the country.

A spokesperson for the service said: “It is vital people who are able to donate blood do so, especially in the run up to Christmas and new year.”

“This winter could potentially be bad for us due to the problems with swine flu aswell as common cold and flue sufferers.”

“People have to understand that they are saving lives of people young and old who need blood transfusions.”

Last month, Edinburgh rivals Hearts and Hibs joined together in a bid to promote the need for blood donors in Scotland.

Hearts vice captain Marius Zaliukas and Hibs skipper Chris Hogg, dedicated their free time to donate blood and raise awareness of the falling numbers.

Anybody who is generally in good health, aged between 17-65 and weighs at least 7 stone 12 lbs can potentially give blood.

New blood donors should ensure they have had a recent seasonal flu or swine flu jab.

Town in need of fresh news

By Ross Winton

Local news in Midlothian looks set to come under pressure with the introduction of a cutting-edge newspaper.

Penicuik’s ‘Town Crier’ is to be challenged by a new publication called ‘The Monthly Edit’.

The ‘Town Crier’, which has run since January 1965, has come under scrutiny in recent years from locals, suggesting not enough effort is being put into the scheme.

Now, a group of Penicuik residents have gathered together in a bid to give their area fresh impetus in terms of news and attempt to restore community spirit.

Barry Turner, head of media production at ‘The Monthly Edit’ was confident that the new venture would ultimately be a success.

“What we’re looking to do here is bring a sense of pride back into Penicuik.”

“As successful as the Town Crier has been in the past, it’s days are numbered now so we’re hoping to become the main source of local news in the area.”

“It’s early days so far, but our ambition is to eventually branch out into Roslin, Loanhead and other surrounding areas.”

‘The Monthly Edit’ is currently focusing on advertising for local businesses and as space is limited in their paperback publication, they are offering full adverts in the Live Editorial section of their website.

In addition to local advertising, they also hope to report on local news in the shape of sports, charity events and educational stories.

Having been let down by a freelance journalist initially, the publication is currently seeking young, enthusiastic citizen journalists to help report on local stories.

Numbers running at high rate

Edinburgh’s 2010 half marathon has recieved a massive boost with news that this year’s event has received a record number of entrants for this time of year.

The event, which takes place in April next year, already has 800 registered participants, and with six months left until the big day, next Spring’s run looks set to reach an all time record number.

Last year’s event saw triple olympic gold medalist and Edinburgh native Sir Chris Hoy in attendance which was naturally a massive draw for the vastly popular charity run.

The thirteen mile journey will commence from Edinburgh’s Meadowbank Stadium, and see the runners struggle along the glorious Firth of Forth until reaching Prestonpans, at where they will double back on themselves before culminating in a grand finish at Mussleburgh Racecourse.

Race Director Mike James expressed his enthusiasm for the upcoming event.

” We have 800 runners so far, which is well ahead of this time last year. We hope to have between 3,500 and 4,000 runners.”

“Runners should take part in this event as it is as fast, flat course from Edinburgh to Mussleburgh with some stunning views along the way.”

“We are dedicated to offer a peoples challenge event for runners of all abilities.”

“Chris Hoy was here in 2009 and we hope he will be in attendance again.”

The race costs a very modest £27 to enter, and all runners must be representing a charity of their choice.

The run, sponsored by recognised companies like Highland Spring and Lucozade, will get underway at 9am on Sunday April 18th.

Liverpool begin to turn corner

rafaelbenitez_wideweb__470x393,0

By Ross Winton

After what can only be described as a dreadful start to their league campaign, Liverpool FC appear to have finally clicked into gear ahead of their opening UEFA Champions League encounter tonight.

Last seasons Barclay’s Premier League runners-up have made life difficult for themselves already this term having lost as many league games in their first three of this season as they did in the whole of last season. Defeat away from home to a rampant Tottenham Hotspur was followed by a lacklustre display at Anfield to Aston Villa, which left Rafael Benitez’s men with just 3 points from a possible 9.

Such poor displays from the Red’s, collaborated with the loss of playmaker Xabi Alonso to Real Madrid in the summer, left national press already questioning whether or not Liverpool were equipped to challenge for their first league title in nearly 20 years.

But Benitez’s men are if nothing else resilient and proved their mettle with a gritty display away to Bolton, and a resounding 4-0 victory over Burnley on Saturday.

And now the Liverpool boss believes his squad are ready to once again show their European credentials ahead of this evening’s clash with Hungarian champions Debrecen.

Benitez said: ”We have been working hard, sending scouts to watch them and we have a lot of information now.”

”The players are excited. We know the Champions League is a massive trophy and it is always important to win trophies.”

In previous years, Benitez has been criticised for regarding the Champions League as his main priority as opposed to the league title, but it seems now the Spaniard is focussed on all major competitions as Liverpool attempt to claim their first silverwear since their dramatic FA Cup victory in 2006.

Things now appear to be taking a turn for the better at Anfield, but work must still be done if the Red’s are to secure their first league title since Kenny Dalglish’s class of 1990.
