Ricky Preddie, one of the brothers convicted of the manslaughter of Damilola Taylor, is back in jail after breaching the conditions of his release. Preddie, who has been living in a probation hostel, was jailed for eight years in 2006 along with his brother, but was released from prison in September of last year.
Licence conditions imposed on Preddie banned him from the Southwark area of London and from associating with gang members, along with a strict curfew and a geographical exclusion zone, but Preddie was seen meeting with known gang members in the restricted area on at least one occasion, and following a meeting between police and probation officers, was arrested and returned to a south London prison on Friday evening.
Damilola’s death in November 2000 came just a few months after his family moved to England from Nigeria. After being stabbed in the thigh with a broken bottle by a gang of youths, the youngster bled to death in a stairwell near his home in Peckham.
Preddie and his brother, Danny, were charged with manslaughter in 2005 after a re-examination of forensic evidence showed tiny fibres and spots of blood, and the two were jailed in October 2006 for eight years.
