Forrest strikes twice as Scotland overpowers Albania

Scotland dominated Albania to keep alive their Euro 2020 playoff hopes, with James Forrest scoring his first goals for the national team.

It was a huge win for Alex McLeish’s side in Shkoder, Albania on Saturday night. Scotland scored four goals, giving very few opportunities to their opponents.

Ryan Fraser opened the scoring, when he rifled a shot past Albanian keeper Berisha after recovering the ball in the Albanian half of the pitch, and Steven Fletcher converted a penalty kick after a hand-ball committed by Rej Manaj.

Between the two goals, Albanian captain Mergim Mavraj was sent off after head-butting Celtic player Ryan Christie.

In the second half, Scotland simply extended the lead with the first two goals by Forrest in the dark blue, to seal the win.

Striker Steven Fletcher praised his teammates after the match. “It is a young energetic squad; the quality is there to be seen,” he said. “You don’t understand how good players are until you train with them. You see how high the tempo is, and it’s good.”

Scotland and Israel now both have 7 points in Group 1 in League C of the UEFA Nations League. The two sides now head to Hampden Park in Glasgow for the final game of the first stage.

Scotland need to win in order to secure a spot for the playoffs, while a draw or defeat would see Israel progress.

The best second placed team in League C will also advance to the playoff, but teams such as Romania, Bulgaria and Greece are better placed.
