Grayling fishing permits are to be released for the River Esk in Musselburgh this week for the upcoming winter fishing season.

Fishing enthusiasts will be able to purchase the £15 permits for the season that runs from December 26th until March 15th; fishing is permitted from Wednesday through Monday – no fishing is permitted on Tuesdays.

The permits will be available for purchase from Ace Bike Co. behind the Brunton Theatre and Tracey’s Convenient Store on Eskview Terrace.

Children up to 12 years old can fish for free, accompanied by an adult permit holder.

Chris Halliday, Chairman of the Musselburgh and District Angling Association,  detailed the fishing conduct expected:  “Anglers are asked to use barb-less hooks for easier removal and to always try to keep the fish in the water if possible.”

“We also ask that they take care not to leave any litter around the riverbank especially old hooks and fishing line which can cause serious problems for dogs and wildlife.”

The area open for fishing is between the Esk estuary and the boundary with Buccleuch Estates (just downstream of the A1) from both banks.

No killing of the fish is allowed and is by fly only.
