Edinburgh Capitals host defending league champion Cardiff Devils tonight at Murrayfield in hope of ending a two-year losing streak.

The Capitals last win against the Devils was 725 days ago in a 4-3 home win and Capitals captain Mike D’Orazio believes “now is the ideal time” to win against an out of form Devils team.

BT Shield round up

The first round of the BT Edinburgh Shield took place this weekend across a capital caught up in international fever. While Samoa pushed Scotland to the edge at Murrayfield the teams of the BT East Region Division one and two went head to head.

The weekend’s fixtures started with a match-up beneath the lights as Ross High hosted Division 1 Forresters. This match set the tone for the weekend as the underdogs Ross High RFC came out 29-15 and put together a complete performance holding off a strong forward pack from Forresters who will no doubt be disappointed after putting together a cup run last season.

On Saturday, the upsets kept flowing as many of the second division teams took down the higher ranked opposition. Penicuik RFC caused, arguably, the biggest upset of the season as they picked up only their fourth win of the season in a tight 17-12 win over Livingston RFC.

Penicuik trailed for the majority of the game but stuck with their game plan eventually scoring a vital try (?) to edge the game.

Division Two “top dogs” Barnton RFC continued their season success by easing past Portobello FP 85-12 after a dominant first half dispelled any underdog tag. Trinity Academicals piled the misery on RHC Cougars turning around a game which they trailed by 12 points by scoring 64 of their own.

Division Two tie Edinburgh University Medics who easily moved into the next round with a 31-5 win over basement club Liberton.  It was not all bad news for Liberton, as the result was a marked improvement over the 57-0 defeat they suffered in the same fixture last month.

Elsewhere in the round the highest placed team, North Berwick eased passed Leith Rugby Club 81-14 thanks to a hat-trick of tries from Nick Hammond and Dunbar RFC broke the hundred point barrier as they trounced in a game that will leave scars on the Inverleith psyche, winning 106-3.

The Second round draw took place Tuesday the 14th of November with some great fixtures being drawn.  In an all Division one match up North Berwick RFC host bottom club Dunbar RFC and the only match that offers a chance of a major upset is Division Two high-flyers Ross High RFC hosting Division One Linlithgow. All ties are set to take place Saturday 6th of January.
