Cardinal Kieth O’Brien, the leader of the Catholic Church in Scotland visited a woman in hospital who confessed to murdering her three children, it is believed.
Theresa Riggi, 47, is currently being monitored at the Orchard Clinic at Royal Edinburgh Hospital. She pleaded culpable homicide on the grounds of diminished responsibility after she was first charged with murder of her three children, twins Austin and Luke, 8 and Cecilia, 5 back in August of last year. The visit from Cardinal O’Brien is thought to have occurred a few weeks before the state visit from Pope Benedict XVI late last year. Riggi and her family were devout Catholics and she requested the visit from the pope.
A spokesman for the Catholic Church in Scotland spoke to the Herald and confirmed the visit, “We can confirm that Cardinal O’Brien did make a private pastoral visit to Mrs Riggi while she was a patient at the Royal Edinburgh Hospital last year. It happened at her request.”
However, they refused to divulge any further details of the meeting. Riggi is due to be sentenced on April 26.
