Kiwi makes Murrayfield debut for Scotland

Kiwi born Scotland International says his Murrayfield debut was “nothing he’s ever seen in rugby before.”

Fergus Burke made his Scotland debut in July of this year against Fiji in the summer tests.

His first time playing at the ‘home of Scottish Rugby’ was on Sunday against Tonga where he converted 5 of the 8 tries before being subbed off for the last 10 minutes. Read fans reactions here.

He said: “Coming in on the bus, it was nothing I’ve ever seen in rugby. It was a pinch me moment that I’ll remember forever.”

The Kiwi was not called up for any other games in the Autumn Nations Series but said that the camp in Murrayfield was tense after losses to New Zealand and Argentina: “It was brutal on Tuesday when we came in, and everyone just owned it.

“We’re a full squad whether you’re out there or not, you feel the same pain and you ride the roller coaster with them.”

The number 10 jersey has quite the queue at the moment with Finn Russel, Tom Jordan, Adam Hastings, Ross Thompson and now Burke all in contention.

He said: “Obviously Finn’s one of the best in the world at the moment, so it’s always good to have someone like that to chase and learn off, it’s pretty cool.”

“I have full respect for Finn and where he is in his career, how he’s been playing the last few years.

“The more I can put my hand up for other roles and for opportunities like this, then that’s what I’m chasing.”

Burke has only played teams from the Pacific while in the blue, he said: “They’ve all been physical, which I think has been good.”

He currently plays fly-half for Gallagher Prem team, Saracens, who take on Bath – Finn Russell’s side – on Sunday.

Burke said: “I enjoy playing against him.

“The last time we played against them they got us good, so it would be good to try get one back.”

Saracens sit 5th in the Gallagher Prem and will look to climb when they face 2nd place Bath this weekend.
