A new dawn for Scottish Cricket as new Head Coach announced

Cricket Scotland have today announced Owen Dawkins as their new head coach of the Men’s national team.

Former captain and Cricket Scotland Hall of Fame inductee Gordon Drummond has also been named the new assistant coach for the team.

Dawkins has worked as a coach for the past twenty years, most recently as the Gloucestershire CCC batting coach and head coach of their second XI.

I got a chance to speak to Dawkins who said: “I’m over the moon, It’s a really exciting opportunity, I can’t wait to get going. I’m really looking forward to starting up with our training and start with our matches in the new year.”

Asked about his thoughts on the team and how far he feels his group of players can go, he gave a positive indication: “I think it’s the talented group of players, both our senior players and our developing players coming up. It’s going to be really good to see our progression in our training and our matches to see how far they can keep pushing themselves.”

Dawkins spoke positively on the future of Cricket in Scotland, citing that participation of the sport has increased in recent years.

He said: “I’ve been fortunate to be part of the last three cycles for the under-19s World Cups and the talent pool is forever growing, the importance that the organisation is putting on in the work and development that goes into the 19s programmes is constantly growing.”

Gordon Drummond will join Dawkins to lead the programme.

Drummond said: “I’ve been working with some of the players in the group, so when I saw this opportunity I thought this was a great opportunity to make a difference.”

Drummond wasted no time setting a high bar for the upcoming year.

He said: “Qualification for these world events has to be the goal of any successful side. Then the next step is getting good performances at the World Cup. To do that we need to continue the development of our players.”

Drummond hopes to channel his experience as a player to help the current crop of players develop.

He said: “I was lucky enough to go to world events, as a player and a coach with the under-19s so I think I bring this array of knowledge to the group of what’s required to get to world cups.

Cricket Scotland’s focus is to get to the next World Cup in 2027 and they will be hoping Owen Dawkins and Gordon Drummond will be the coaching team to bring that success and more.
